Exclamation Walled Garden not fully down ?

Guys,

I could of course be wrong, but I have a feeling that the notorious walled garden isnt fully down...

I have my own domain, and use "Runbox" (www.runbox.com) as my email hosting company...

Now, I use Mozilla Thunderbird for email, which has sent and received my email quite happily for a very long time (I have used Runbox for about two years, and so happy am I with their service I am signed up until January 4th 2013)

However, put the exact same IMAP settings as I have in Thunderbird into my Nokia 6630, and my phone just hangs, and does not receive email, let alone am I able to send any...

Also, the same IMAP configuration just causes "Profi Mail", the email program available from Lonely Cat Games (www.lonelycatgames.com), to also just hang...

The only conclusion I can draw therefore is that the walled garden isnt fully down...

Of course, I can now access my Runbox account via WAP, but as my 6630 has an inbuilt email application, its a pity not to be able to use it, or a third party email program...

If any of you have had success in configuring your phone and / or mobile email program to send / receive email through a Three mobile, I would be delighted to hear from you...

Jeff

Hey Jeff,

This is as I expected. The deal with Yahoo! opens up Three to browsing mobile websites using Yahoo!'s compression/rendering technologies for the small screen. It does not cover other protocols such as IMAP and I would imagine this is why you are having trouble.

This is correct, The free Internet powered by Yahoo is for browsing only!! If you want email access you need to either get an email add on, or for email and messenger (agilemessenger for example) you have to get the wireless web add on!!!
Email access does not work with the mobile websites add on either...

Thanks Guys,

The slim chance that I would stay with Three, now that the walled garden is down, has all but evaporated now....

It's a pickle to be sure. Three are making their customers lives so unnecessarily complicated by all these varying levels of restrictions. It's safe to say that data on Three is still a minefield.

Really? it seems quite simple to me, if you want to browse the internet then you get 30MB free per month, if you want complete browsing for emails and messaging then you need the Wireless Web add on..

So is this not what the internet is there for to read e mails etc? Would you take dial up or Broadband at home if you were not permitted access to your e mails?

And was this listed in their T&Cs 30 MB free permonth , but as well as no access to porn sites, etc, we dont let you have access to e mails. very very miss leading.

I had asked the question tonight if I should go back to t-mobile with web and walk or go to three with 30MB a month, I think you have just answered my question all is not what it is claimed to be, plus three have put a limit on your choice of plans and mobiles you can have the yahoo internet on

But is that not the same with T-Mobiles Web n Walk? my mate tells me he is limited to what he can view, and he also can't get his emails, or is he doing something wrong??

Regarding Three, if you want email access with your FREE 30 MB then you have to take one of their email add on's, to be quite honest i think their new internet offerings fairly good, at least its more freedom then what people had before!! I know some operators charge over £3 per Meg for internet connection, i pay £15 and get unristricted internet access with Three, im very happy with that service!

T-Mobile don't prevent a user from accessing anything (apart from adult rated without verification) anymore to the best of my knowledge - just rule against certain things in their T&C's. They did used to prevent users checking third party email, but I don't believe that is the case anymore.

I'm sending this from a laptop using a mobile on WnW Pro and read and send email all the time. I do various other things like ssh tunelling etc and haven't found any obvious restrictions. Only minor one is that web browsing goes through a tranparent proxy that reduces image size.

I am able to use the original WNW (non-Pro) to access eMaıl via the 6280's built in pop3 client. Also to access webmail sites with the WNW Opera Mini browser. No restrictions there. WNW Pro is even betterer
