DefaultN70 First thoughts

After spending almost 24 hours of non-stop fiddling with my new Nokia N70, i thought id share my first thoughts with anyone thinking of purchasing one of Nokia's sexy new breed.

When i first opened the box of the N70 my first reaction was a loud "oooooOOOoooo" followed by "Wow, its not that big!". I had a pre-conceived image that the N70 was gonna be one of them uber Symbian phones aka Nokia 3650 etc.(mostly due to the fact every picture i saw on the internet showed the phone by itself so i had no basis of comparison).

Infact, the N70 is only a centimeter longer than the rather small SonyEricsson W800i. Now a centimetre can make or break a phone, but to be honest the large screen and small keypad make it look bigger than it really is.

When i first picked HER up out of the box i noticed her weight. She is quite a top heavy model (normally a good thing ), but this is down to the fact that both cameras and the back-slider are at the top of the phone. The N70 isnt as top-heavy as her older sister Ms 6680 though. N70 maybe slightly heavy and i mean SLIGHTLY heavy but this does not detract from her allure. Infact the N70's weight is almost a + point as it gives the feeling that it wont break if your a bit rough with her. She feels very expensive too. Shes smooth, slick and feels very good to touch. *spoken in the voice of Barry White*. Ms N70 is a lady through and through.

Once i fiddled about getting her back undone and getting the battery and sim in, i excitedly turned her on. The first thing i noticed was the screen. Just like her older sister 6680, the N70 had a lovely screen. It is bright, crisp with hardly any signs of pixels that are noticeable on such lesser phones. Beware though, the first time N70 powers up it takes quite a worrying time to actually load. I stood in panick and my heartbeat rapidly increased when she sat for almost 2 minutes displaying the word "NOKIA". Dont worry though, i think she was just playing hard to get for the first time.

Any seasoned Nokia user will noticed the on-screen graphics have had a nice makeover. They are more rounded and make it look like they have been designed properly. Whilst the screen of Ms N70 is not as good as her slightly odd-looking Nseries sister, the N90, it will still satisfy 99.9% of the time.

Moving round the menus is a pleasure. They are fast and responsive, something Series 60 handsets sometimes suffer with. Note that when you enter some applications for the first time, they can take a while but once they have set up properly the wait times dramtically decrease. Moving through menus and lists presented no problems. . . untill. . . . *dramatic noises*. . .you enter the Gallery. The Gallery is the virtually the hub of all that N70 has to offer. Pics, vids, tracks, everything you can imagine can be viewed, deleted, edited from here. However, accessing the Gallery can often result in rather long wait times. My N70 with nothing but preinstalled items on it took up too 10 seconds to load. Then once the menu itself has loaded you then need to navigate your way to the actual gallery to view your items. The viewer itself opens much quicker, but the small thumbnails of pics/vids can take a few seconds to load. Its not really much of a problem as you can move through your items easily, but if you dont no the name of what your looking for and you're depending on a thumbnail then this could get tedious.

(Ive taken 8 pics/vids so far and the load time of the gallery has now increased to 14 seconds.)

Although shes rather slow in the gallery department, she makes up for it in every other. Messaging, internet browsing, general fiddling are all quick and slick. Using the camera is rather like a hybrid of a traditional Nokia S60 handset and the Nokia N90. The N90 is the ultimate imaging phone but very slow and long winded. It seems the N70 has been refined in that way as the camera has the same options of the N90 but with the quick usability of a typical Nokia. One click and the picture is taken. The quality so far has been hit and miss. A few pictures ive taken look no better than a VGA camera, however, once you swap a few settings and preferences around the 2mp camera becomes apparent. The video camera is very much the same as using the normal camera. The video quality of N70 has had a much needed upgrade to that of the more caveman-like quality of 6680. VHS videos are the future and recording is easy and fluid.

The back sliding panel is also much firmer than its previous outing in the 6680. It is very sturdy and very smooth when opening. When you slide N70's top down, the camera application is automatically launched making caputering moments very easy. Ive noticed that keeping the slider down permanently doesnt detract from the style of the N70 either unlike the way it did with the 6680.

Music and ringtones are good too. The loudspeaker on N70 is very very good. She cant half scream ! (if you know the right buttons to press of course )

I know i keep refering to the Nokia 6680 but its an undeniable comparison as the N70 is effectively what the 6680 should have been. No doubt there will be similar comparison when the heavy-weight N80 storms into the market later this year.

Sooo that was my first thoughts on the Nokia N70. So far shes been a wonderful companion. She is clever, sexy, and i just cant help but touch her....perhaps i have a problem? hmmm

Anyways, so far the Nokia N70 gets an 8/10 for me. While shes a massive upgrade from her cumbersome older sister the 6680, she still has some issues in the brains department when it comes to loading the Gallery. Hopefully this could be remedied in future software versions.

Ill also be loading some pictures and videos of her in action in the next couple of days so check them out too. If you have any questions or have any requests dont hesitate to ask, she will happily ablige.

Just as a quick note... the gallery timings are a bit of an issue and depending on which firmware version you have, the N70 will handle them in different ways [I'm assuming since you've only just got your phone that you must have a recent version...]. If you have plenty of free memory on the internal or MMC, the thumbnails are auto generated and it's just a case of loading them up. if you're in and out of the gallery a lot then they'll stay in memory - you should only notice a lag when you take a new picture and immediately go to the gallery or if you're doing lots of stuff elsewhere and then navigate back.

Hopefully this doesn't spoil your enjoyment of it too much

Ive got a bit of a tip for anyone using the N70 who has lots of load times on the gallery. If you select a picture in the menu you have the option to "shrink" it. On a 266KB picture the phone then reduced it to a 30KB picture. There is no loss of quality at all however ive not tried sending the shrunken pics to a pc.

This dramatically increases not only your available memory but also cuts the load times in half!
