Thanks for your further email about unlocking your phone so you can use another networks SIM card inside.
I've looked into this for you and to unlock your phone, we'll need to give the owner you something called a subsidy PIN. To request this theres a charge of £15 (including VAT). It may take up to 28 working days for us to send your subsidy PIN to the owner of the phone, but normally its a lot quicker than this. It may be that not all of your phone's features will work on another network and you'll need to check that your phone is compatible with the network you're planning to use it on. Sometimes you'll also need a working SIM card to unlock it. (Though you won't need one on a Sony Ericsson phone.) There are a few things your friend will need to have done on their account, before we can give you your subsidy PIN: If your friend has a pay as you go account They'll need to have made their first top-up at least three months ago. They can then pay the £15 charge for the PIN by topping up their account with vouchers or an electronic top-up card, or by credit or debit card if they have one registered with us. If your friend has a pay monthly account They'll need to have had their T-Mobile account for at least a month. They shouldn't have asked more than three times for a subsidy PIN in the last 12 months. They'll need to have paid any outstanding amounts on their bills. We can then add the £15 charge for the PIN to their monthly bill. To get the subsidy PIN, please ask your friend to email us again with the following information: there name, mobile number, and account password (if they don't have a password, they'll need to set one up -they can do this at http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=help_cu_ap) an alternative number we can contact them on the make and model of the phone the IMEI number - you'll find this on the back of your phone underneath the battery, or by pressing *#06# on your keypad (or on a Blackberry use the track wheel to scroll to Hide Call and press Return - then from the Options menu on the front screen choose Status Open and you'll see your IMEI) tell us how they'd like to pay the £15 charge. Alternatively, they can call our customer service team on 150 from a T-Mobile phone or on 0845 412 5000 from a landline (charged at local rates) and we'll set this up for them. We're here Monday to Sunday from 7am to 10pm. I hope the information I've given you today is helpful Andy, and that you manage to get your phone unlocked. Thanks again for taking the time to email me. If I can be of any further help please feel free to contact me again or visit http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/contactus, and complete the online form. Kind regards |

Thanks for the update! Hmph. Well, it was a comprehensive reply, that's for sure. I'm not so sure I like the idea of them asking for account passwords over email.
It would seem, then, that subsidised handsets must be unlocked by the original owner. That'd serve as a good 'buyers beware' for anyone looking to get a handset off ebay that currently has a network lock. It's all a bit befuddling really :\ |
