So, I've been in Australia for a few weeks (lucky me!) and being the phone geek that I am I just had to get a local sim. When I landed at Sydney Airport most Aussie carriers have a shop on site, but I plumped for Vodafone. Generally, I thought their coverage would suit my needs as I was planning on doing some travelling within the country. Anyway...the rep was very helpful and gave me a few options. In the end I opted for the $49 "recharge" option which is basically their version of PAYG. This gave me $350 of credit which I could use on calls and texts and 3GB of data. So for £35 I had a sim that I expected would more than meet my holiday requirements. Which it did - just! Without WiFi 3GB of data is nothing.

Coverage was generally H+ but speeds were often slow and ping times were less than responsive. However, for the most part I had usable data and would recommend this option for anyone travelling out there.

There is one thing though that I didn't even try to get my head around - what does $350 of credit actually mean? In the UK pricing seems to be pretty clear as most (if not all) carriers give you minutes instead of credit when you buy a bundle. The other problem I had was that I couldn't find the plan I bought anywhere online. Have a look at http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/...sim-only-plans to see what I mean.

As a one off purchase this sim seemed good value, but when you compare it to my giffgaff sim it appears expensive.

When you go on holiday do you bother with a local sim? Can you survive on wifi? I found the 'free' wifi in Oz to be useless.

Wednesday, 3rd April 2013 Vodafone Ireland has launched Vodafone RED, a completely new approach to mobile price plans that offers bill pay customers a choice of five plans with added benefits at no extra cost. The five new plans challenge the current conventions on tariffing and move in a new direction, giving customers a range of simple options to enjoy an easier and richer mobile life at better value. To celebrate the launch of ‘A Good Thing’, Vodafone RED commissioned international 3D street artist Julian Beever to capture his interpretation of “A Good Thing”, which resulted in a fun-filled day at the beach in the heart of the IFSC’s Mayor Square (#agoodthing)!

With Vodafone RED, the signature plan, customers will enjoy endless calls and texts to any network plus 2GB of data for only €55 per month. In addition, this plan includes an optional new phone ever year such as the Samsung Galaxy SIII, expert care support for the first three months with easy, direct access to specialist care for any set-up, billing or technical queries which customers may have. The Vodafone RED plan also includes 5GB of free cloud storage.

The other plans in the new Vodafone RED[1] range are:

Vodafone Red Essentials (€35 per month)
Vodafone RED Super (€75 per month)
Vodafone RED 30 Day (€40 per month)
Furthermore, there is a new price plan for business customers, Vodafone RED Business Super, which is priced at €75 per month.

Introducing the new plans, Marcel de Groot, Consumer Director, Vodafone Ireland said “We’re calling time on complex call charges. We’ve looked at how customers are using their mobile devices and what matters most to them. These new plans reflect their changing needs. With Vodafone RED customers will be able to talk for as long as they want to as many people as they like without wondering about the cost. What’s more they will be able to enjoy as much data as they are ever likely to need - for sharing photos to uploading videos - as well as additional benefits for no extra cost making Vodafone RED the best value ever for mobile customers.”

Visit Vodafone RED for further information.

Hi,

I've gotten way too many mixed response on this topic.

I'm going abroad for a few weeks soon, and I'd like to know my options.

I understand that conditional diverts will most definitely attract roaming charges.
I've seen that unconditional diverts do not incur those charges, as far as most operators go.

Three mobile (UK)'s (rather horrendous) customer service hasn't given me a definite answer with respect to this. Does anyone have experience with unconditional diverts while roaming out of 3's network?

Also, if there aren't any charges, would there be charges if I initiated the call diverts while abroad?

SATELLITE 2013 Conference, Washington DC, and SINT-NIKLAAS, Belgium, 19 March 2013 The World Teleport Association (WTA) has awarded satellite specialist Newtec’s M6100 Broadcast Satellite Modulator with the prestigious accolade of Teleport Technology of the Year 2013. Newtec was praised by judges for providing the greatest contribution to the business and operational success of teleports by lowering costs, increasing efficiency, enabling new capabilities and providing access to new markets.

Serge Van Herck (right), CEO of Newtec, receiving the Teleport Technology of the Year award from Louis Zacharilla (left), Director of Development, World Teleport Association
The Newtec M6100 Broadcast Satellite Modulator is a next generation DVB-S2, DVB-DSNG and DVB-S modulator that is ready to support the new upcoming S2 Extensions and RF Carrier ID DVB standards. It has specifically been designed for broadcast Direct to Home (DTH), primary distribution to headends and contribution of television and radio content. It can be used in conjunction with set-top boxes, professional IRD’s or professional satellite demodulators and also as a platform to play a central role in networks, helping evolve businesses through ongoing market and technology innovations.

“I am very proud of the entire Newtec team for all of the work that has gone into developing a product which is capable of winning this award, greatly respected by everyone in the industry,” said Serge van Herck, CEO of Newtec. “The M6100 attempts to cover every eventuality that a teleport operator will need in order to maximize business potential, not just now but also in the future. We are proud that it is being backed by some of the industry’s most important players.”

Since 1995, the WTA has presented annual awards to companies and individuals that have dramatically demonstrated excellence in the field of teleport operations, development and technology. Since inception the WTA has been the only trade association that focuses on the business of satellite communications from the ground up.

The M6100 is designed to evolve with the customer needs by flexibly allowing re-allocation of network resources towards different or new applications or customers. It also reduces OPEX by ensuring the delivery of the highest modulation efficiency, whilst deploying Newtec technologies including Equalink®, Clean Channel Technology™ and the new S2 Extensions. The M6100 is built to help reduce the impact of RF carrier interferences by supporting the new DVB RF Carrier Identifier (DVB-CID). It also incorporates new capabilities to deliver services over Ka-band that are much needed by teleports and their customers looking to offer new services.

MOGADISHU, Somalia and SINT-NIKLAAS, Belgium, 12 March 2013 Talia and Newtec are pleased to announce the provision of a new satellite communications backbone infrastructure for AGSM.MOBI, a Mobile operator in Somalia. Based on Newtec’s FlexACM® technology, the network will enable reliable mobile voice, data, and payment services throughout Somalia.

Somalia is a country in the midst of rapid economic and social change. With a population of more than 10 million, mobile connections have risen dramatically in the past two years to exceed 3 million connections and are expected to reach more than 5 million by 2015.

Talia Logo
“The communications infrastructure for mobile calling, payments, and data services have to be rock-solid,” said Abdullahi Abdi Hussein, President and CEO, ASGSM.MOBI. “Talia have extensive experience in providing such services, and with Newtec technology, we are getting a reliable, cost-effective service based on industry-leading technology.”

The AGSM.MOBI network will be hosted at the Talia Teleport and other places, and Talia will provide connectivity as a managed service, interconnecting with co-located ASGSM.MOBI equipment. The satellite network will run over a fully-redundant Newtec hub.

“The current absence of a national telecommunications infrastructure in Somalia, along with the ever-growing need for voice and mobile data, make satellite communications a natural fit,” said Alan Afrasiab, President and CEO of Talia. “And Newtec FlexACM technology was the natural fit for the technology – fast, efficient and offering the best mix of reliability and cost possible.”

FlexACM is an end-to-end solution combining a range of technologies to optimize IP trunking and IP backbone satellite links in the most efficient way. FlexACM can double data rates in the same bandwidth without the need to acquire extra satellite capacity.

Serge Van Herck, CEO of Newtec, said: “We are very excited to be working with Talia and integrating FlexACM to optimize the satellite link and ensure that it is robust even in conditions of dust and rain fade – which can be a challenge in the sub-Saharan and tropical regions in Somalia. The auto-adaptive technology incorporated inside Newtec’s FlexACM takes care of any fading condition, interference (noise and distortion) or variation in the satellite link. This avoids link and data losses to provide optimal service availability.”

Tri-band LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5: 2100, 1800, 850 MHz).

Vodafone UK purchased 800mhz and 2600mhz spectrum for LTE, and the iPhone 5 supports neither!

Is it just me, or is the iPhone 5 about to become a very expensive aluminium paperweight for most Vodafone contract customers when Vodafone UK launch LTE in Spring 2013?

actually it get's worse, Vodafone 4G promise states:

 Upgrade early to Vodafone 4G
If you've bought an iPhone 5, Samsung GALAXY S III or a GALAXY Note II, when we launch 4G simply bring it back to one of our stores. Even if your plan hasn't ended, we'll knock off 70% of your remaining charges, letting you upgrade your phone early and start a fresh 4G plan.

so let's see what is available:
