Apple is now the world's biggest smartphone vendor by shipments, adding to the accolades of biggest by revenue and profit. Sales grew 142% YoY for Q2, despite the iPhone 4 being a year old.
Samsung, however, saw sales grow some 500%, so Apple's time at the top is likely to be short. Both players have leapfrogged Nokia, now a lowly third.
Apple's feat is particularly remarkable for two reasons. One, the iPhone is expensive, positioned right at the very top of the market. Two, Apple only really make one smartphone, where as other manufacturers tend to have a broader range.
Apple has 18.5% of the smartphone market, and 5.6% of global mobile phone sales. Yes, boys and girls, 5.6% of all phones sold in the world in Q2 were iPhones.
