Research firm Canalys has found that, thanks to Apple's iPad, the Cupertino California based company now ranks 4th in the world for PC shipments, taking 9.5% market share.
As netbook sales have crumbled so have the fortunes of some other PC manufacturers, while the initial success of the iPad has been enough to propel Apple up the rankings. A year ago, Q1, Apple had just 3.5% of the market.
While some will claim that Apple's iPad is no PC, it's hard to deny that it can do much of, and in some cases more than, what many netbooks can do.

Note: Apple's Q4 market share actually exceeded 10%, putting it in 3rd place ahead of Dell. These Q1 numbers do not take into account iPad 2. I conclude that this gives them 'solid' 4th place ranking, but it looks like there's every chance Apple could usurp Dell's 3rd place spot longer-term depending on the fortunes of iPad 2 in a rapidly crowding market.
