Surprising announcement seen on the web today ... The Google Nexus One is getting an update ahead of the Gingerbread Android 2.3 firmware due out some time soon.

While we’re all waiting for the arrival of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), it looks like Google is currently sending out and OTA update updating the device to the FRG83D. The update brings a 1.3MB file with patches and bug fixes and the device stays at Android 2.2.1. After the folks over at Android Central picked around through the update, they describe the update as bringing:

The Froyo framework has been patched, as has the applications debugger. When we look at the system applications, each has a small patch, but Vending (the Android Marketplace), the Google services framework, and the GoogleEmail application (not Gmail) has a larger patch in place. There’s also a small patch to the stock recovery.

We’re assuming this update is just paving a nice little foundation for the upcoming firmware update to rest upon and as we get a little closer to the next firmware upgrade, the anticipation is killing us. Are you ready for Android’s latest treat?

*Update* It looks like the Android Market has been updated to version 2.09.
