View Full Version : Has o2's network improved?

Well basically just that, I've noticed massive improvements the past 4 days or so, specially call wise, quicker connections but mostly big improvements data wise, seems very stable and faster?? I am currently in Cornwall though and have been for a week, but until Wed was experiencing poor service on calls/data..
Anyone else's experience been a little better of late??

Nope! If anything, this weekend has been particularly dire in North Kent where we have very sporadic 3G service, and weak 2G service. I did see some EDGE, which in itself is unusual here, but that didn't last.
If O2 are seriously rolling out more EDGE rather than 3G in my area then they are completely bonkers. For £35 I am paying out for a 3G service - the iPhone 3GS I bought from Apple - so I am not at all sympathetic to O2.
In the words of Twitter ... "@O2 #fail" :D

Nope, mine has been awful. Data connectivity has been disappearing completely on me - no 3G, E or even a dot! :(

mine is just tickety boo !!!
Mostly EDGE or 3G
Both in North Yorkshire and when i go back home to Skegness.
Infact Voda was non existent (1 bar if i was lucky) when i went back home which is one of the reasons i had nothing to lose by going with o2 that and Ben nagged me into getting the iPhone :P
infact ive used my iPhone instead of my lappy for a week or so just to see if i could do it, was fab and fast :) checking email accounts/websites and online shopping and chatting loads was which i did the most.
ermm dont you all be thinking you can move up here tho, you can keep your cruddy connections down south :D

There is one single O2 3G mast within a 1km radius. Hilly terrain. No chance of any kind of even signal dispersal. Is it any wonder that the availability is so atrocious.
By comparison even 3 have a superior signal here, Vodafone and T-Mobile are rock solid. Same in London ...
Worse though - even if you can find a strong signal, such as parking across the road from the 3G mast, the data throughput is dire, call set-up is painstakingly slow!
It is a never ending catalogue of #fail for O2

Great to hear someone else finding the same !!
(I am convinced this lot on here are making it up about poor o2 / Good Vodafone coverage !!)
..... Very rarely do I see 3G on my Vodafone HTC magic - and also Very rare that I find myself without o2 coverage on the iPhone .

Well that's all dissapointing to hear, so o2's problems seem to be localised so I expect things to go back to poor when I head back to good ole London in a weeks time.. The past week the only phone and Internet I've had is my iPhone, and as I've said since Wed had been very good.. Although just box standard 2g the Internet has been very fast compared to what I'm use to using 3g back home, maybe locking it to 2g back home is the answer?
This weekend my family came down to join me for a family gathering which gave me the perfect opertunity to test other networks down here as this gives me access to all the networks, where I'm staying in Carylon Bay we have o2 very good 2g (although should be 3g according to o2's web site) my mums on T-Mob and that's very poor here, mostly no service, 1 brother on Voda and that was good 2g, 1 brother on Orange, very good 2g again and my nephew on Three and the only network here to have a 3g signal, not the best signal but calls and Internet worked well whilst on 3g..
On Sat we went to the Lizard (most Southernly UK point) only service on Orange 2g only and Three (via Orange) all others nothing, then we moved to Mullions Cove and service from Voda, Orange and Three (via Orange) then Sunday we went to Port Issac and I've found no mobile land, no service on all networks.. So my findings are down south (Cornwall) Orange does the best or Three..

Hilly terrain.
There are hills in Kent?
No, for me O2 is still the same. Within a few miles I can get everything from no signal to GPRS, Edge and 3G and this is within a populated area. I have not witnessed any sign that O2 are upgrading their network, if anything I'm more conscious that calls are taking a long time to connect and sometimes SMS fail to send.

But if it is localised then surely the only way of improving is by installing more masts in the area to relieve the congestion?? Not a quick process..

in My area, I have found that you could have one person standing next to you with an iphone with full 3G coverage, and then another person standing the other side with an iphone who will be on EDGE or GPRS. It really is very strange. At work I get a full 3G coverage on T-mobile, yet o2 is very very inconsistent. I would say their 2G Signal is pretty good, giving alot of coverage, but their 3G signal is still shocking.

I have exactly the same inconsistency problem with O2 - I can have full 3G and move literally inches to receive just one bar GSM. Makes no sense, whatsoever.
The SMS failing thing annoys me, too.

Gotta say, over the last 5 or so days I've been getting a stable level of coverage where I work which is essentially a black spot being on the bank of a river.
Anyways, I've been getting 3G in areas that used go manage a 'o'. And I've seen E for longer in areas that have long been areas without any service
I wonder what's happening?! Have O2 started some coverage upgrades or what?!

02 have started the process of sharing transmission sites with Vodafone and that could mean better coverage for some 02 customers.
In a couple of years when all of the sharing has been implemented there will be far fewer masts and Vodafone & 02 will have identical coverage.
Perhaps this explains why both Vodafone and 02 customers will experience some differences to their mobile coverage in coming months.

No doubt I'll be gone from O2 by the time they mast share with the Vodafone mast that is 150m away from my front door!

In a simple word, no.
O2's 3G coverage at home is abysmal. Their coverage checker is terrible, and completely unreliable. Every day, I see so many O2 sites that are still 2G only, where every other operator has a 2G/3G site located... it's dire!

Ok I've started noticing something new happening to my iPhone, for the past few days at least once a day when I make calls the call connects but it's dead silence in my phone, if I hang up at try again it's the same, the only fix is turning phone off and on.. So is this a phone or network fault??
