It's been awhile since Motorola has released a significant handset in the UK - the 'world's first phone with a circular display' doesn't count - but it looks like the time away was well spent, with last night's announcement of its Android device, DEXT, the first in a portfolio.
The phone isn't just a great social networking phone, it's also the first with Moto's new interface specially for Android - MOTOBLUR. We spoke to Tom Satchwell, Director of International Marketing and he's pretty sure we'll be 'complete converts'.
'The significant point is our Android solution, MOTOBLUR. This is the first launch on a long journey where we'll be launching extremely exciting products,' he says.
He also said they would be hitting different consumer niches, so we might even expect higher end or business-oriented handsets, all running on MOTOBLUR. Social networking is the core of the BLUR interface though, says Satchwell, which makes the DEXT Moto's first hero handset in ages.
'We've gone through a period of consolidation - who we are, where are strengths lie,' says Satchwell. 'But this industry is here because of us, and we'll continue to leverage our design and engineering expertise. Predominantly our focus is smartphones, but that isn't to say we won't release any feature phones.
The DEXT launches exclusive to Orange in time for Christmas, so expect to see it on shelves 'soon'. We'll be bringing you a hands-on review when the handset is officially launched on Tue, Sep 15.
