Culled from Twitter :)

No 3G on @o2 PAYG iPhone since 3.1 software update? Check the cellular network settings are payandgo.o2.co.uk (not idata.o2.co.uk).

Seems ridiculous that PAYG users have to do this themselves. Do PAYG users do this on any other handset? I've no experience of the market at all.

It's really crap that these settings keep getting lost on PAYG iPhones. Really crap.

Someone get a clue.

The answer to gorilla's question is "No". But then again this is all rather new ground with smartphones being given frequent software updates.

Parallels are forming in the Android camp. Where, for example, HTC Hero users on Vodafone are having horrendous problems with MMS. Not all, mind you, but a proportion who, because the Hero is not a Vodafone supported handset are on their own.

We will see much more of this, I fear, as the new breed of smartphone and OTA and tethered updates of the firmware become the norm. The mobile network operators are unlikely going to be able to keep up.

Maybe the manufacturers are going to have to step up to the plate?

I have said before , I do find it extraordinary that the most capable handset in existance , with the best user experience of any mobile device has to have these setting s manually entered for PAYG customers ... it just sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the iPhone experience.
Of course , being an iPhone it is simple to do , and o2 do provide instructions in the box and on t'nternet ... but thats not the point really.
Would it be that difficult to preconfigure ?
