I thought too many models to list, so I thought brand would be better

If you vote then just leave your model and network

Believe it or not I have 4 lol. I only use 2 though. I have the A1000 (main phone) and the C975 (back up). A925 (what I am getting unlocked to use on o2) and the A835.

Following getti's example:

As i can't make more than one vote I've chose the 3G handset I've got that I like the most! So here's what I'm using currently:

Sanyo S750 - Orange
Sony Ericsson Z1010 - Orange
Nokia 6650 - Orange

I have a Sony Ericsson Z1010 that is unlocked and on vodafone's GSM network at the moment.

What I'd prefer is a 3G Windows Mobile Pocket PC with Integrated Phone Capabilities or a 3G Windows Mobile Smartphone...

Seeing as neither of the above currently exists (although HTC have ANNOUNCED a 3G Pocket PC with Integrated Phone Capabilities!), I'll probably upgrade to Sony Ericsson Z800i as it is the V3 of 3G phones!

In case you're wondering why I'm using a GSM SIM in a 3G phone, it's because we (Australia) currently only have one publically-available 3G network ("3") and to put it nicely, they suck!

3 Won't allow me to use "My Friends," online Java applications (eg. Cannons: Tournament, EmailViewer and WebViewer) and certain other functions, due to the fact that you are locked into their "on3" mobile Internet (WAP) site!

Its nice to see that the mixture of handsets is turning round and people are commenting on the reasons why

Not only does vodafone allow me to use all of these online features, but my 3-branded Z1010 is strangely fully "vodafone live!" compatible!

Besides, when vodafone eventually launch their 3G network, I won't NEED to upgrade due to the fact that vodafone will be operating a WCDMA network, the same as 3 Australia (of course, I WILL upgrade if I have the cash!)...

Looks like 3 are the same over there as over here and its a shame that other networks are not 3G yet.

It will happen soon and you will see the light

Seeing as I'm known as the Forum's own "Threepoint" :) here's my little list.....

Main 3G dog and bone is a Moto E1000 on 3 which I'm delighted with (the phone, not 3)
A835 (unlocked) currently sporting a Vodafone PAYT SIM
LG U8110 (unlocked, reflashed) wearing an easyMobile SIM
LG U8120 (unlocked, reflashed) with a Threepay USIM
The above three are eval/experiment tools.

My main phone (the one I rely upon for my life/business), however, is a non-3G handset, an Orange SPV-C500 which will be upgrading to [probably] a Nokia 6680 3G come November 2005.

Other 3G phones in the family are A835 x 2, LG U8120 x 1, NEC E338 x 1

Loads,

You should take a look at HTC's 3G smartphone...

It is FAR, FAR superior to ANYTHING else on the market and should be available by the end of the year (which is when you indicated that you would be buying a new phone)!

@CybaCowboy - have you got a handy URL for that HTC smartphone? My target date is 26 October 2005 unless Orange will upgrade me earlier at a more reasonable price or free.

I've enjoyed the SPV C-500 which has worked faultlessly, only needing the occasional reset every month or so - otherwise it never gets powered off.

msmobiles.com is probably the best source of information for this phone as they have plenty of pictures and specifications, but PocketPCMag.com should also have some information...

I've got a 6630 on Vodafone. Had it since December last year..VERY happy with it.
Probably going to upgrade to the N70 in October..

On a slightly related note - I think I've got quite an old firmware version on my 6630.
v 2.39.151.. although I'm not sure..
Anyone know how or where I can get it updated?
And what benefits I'll get from doing it.. ?
Cheers!

cyberkid999 has a thread (https://talk3g.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1177) with the latest versions but one for Vodafone isn't available. You can get your software flashed at any Nokia service centre. Locate your nearest one here (http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,33684,00.html).

I saw that thread - thanks mate.
I PMd him my firmware details too..
Cheers mate.

Sorry to keep talking off-topic but what exactly will a firmware update do to my phone? How will it improve? ( if at all )

Ben

It's just a later version of the software. Updates are released to fix bugs in previous versions or rarely to add functionality. Of course, new versions can also have bugs, so unless you're having trouble it's probably not worth it.

I think I'm going to get it done - everytime I turn my phone on it tells me I have new messages and new voicemail when I clearly don't!

Silly thing..

Right then.. off to the carphone warehouse for me then!

The results are looking interesting so far. It is without doubt that a year ago Nokia would not have been in the lead. As one of the last to the real 3G party it's amazing to see how they are making inroads on the manufacturers that were first out the gate. Perhaps it's just their brand, or perhaps their handset quality really has been superior, but whatever it is I think it's fair to say that it's working!

The NSeries should, so long as it isn't a complete disaster, strengthen their position further.

I've got an A1000, A835. But will hopefully be dumping then when the HTC Universal comes out. Then get rid of O2 branding cos frankly, it's poo (put nicely) and bung in my 3 sim. I have no problems with 3 and since I use my phone a lot (both video and voice), 3 suit it perfectly.

Nokia 6680 and previously Nokia 6650, both on Orange. Was part of the original user trial prior to launch, hence the 6650.

I am currently using the industry 3G benchmark for size and functionality as my main phone - Samsung Z500 on Vodafone 3G. What a pleasure to carry and use and no call dropping either.

I also have a Nokia 7600 on 3. A nightmare, cant wait to terminate the contract even although its a fiver a month - its unreliable for voice, texts and the content is overpriced and also ropey in terms of downloads... which they charge you for whether you manage to view them or not! I will have this device unlocked and reflashed when my 3 contract expires.

I smashed up a Motorola c975 as it was just the worst mobile device ever produced. I only bought it on 3 as a backup to use instead of the Nokia 7600 - bad mistake.... still a pleasure hammering it knowing that's another £150 Hutchison have squandered.

My 3 supplied Motorola A835 is now on 02 (2G) as a backup and I have now received an 02 3G SIM. At this time it has yet to be activated but once that has been done I shall be giving it to my sister who I can then videocall for free from Vodafone.

Had 2 X NEC e606's (one was replaced as it was faulty), neither worked well at all on 3 and dropped calls like crazy. None of my 3 handsets have managed to perform well which is why after over 27 months I shall be bidding farewell to the 3 UK 'notwork'. I only ever paid for 4 months on 3 with the e606 as they terminated my contract early due to the abysmal network performance (I kept a log and they did not dispute the statistics), that was good as I recovered all that I paid for the useless service by selling the NEC on e-bay for £95!!!

Its amazing really. I have had 4 handsets supplied by 3. NEC e606 (Cost £0), Moto A-835 (Cost £49 inc £15 top-up), Moto c975 (£49 inc £15 top-up) and a Nokia 7600 (Cost £0). I paid £25 X 4 on contract for the e606 and £5 X 12 for the 7600. I have paid a total of £258.00 for 4 3G handsets plus all the calls etc over 26 months. I got back £95 from the sale of the wretched NEC and sold 2 X USIMS at £18 each = £131. So I have actually only spent £127 (£31 each), not bad really to sample 4 different handsets.

Now happy with my Z500 and delighted that issues (there have been some) are being handled professionally by Vodafone customer service in the UK. 02 also have proved very helpful and have went out of their way to help me upgrade to 3G as a PAYG customer.

What next??? Who knows..... still have to try Orange and T-Mobile's commercial 3G offerings!

After 27 months you now decide to leave 3???
If my service was that bad, the phone would be back within 14 days no matter how good the deal is. Failing that they'd be in court quicker than Michael Jackson.
Why stay with them so long if they are as bad as you make it?

As someone who knew there would be some drawbacks, I chose to subscribe to the only 3G network.

That seems to have been a mistake on my part.

I now have some alternatives.... and those appear to be better.

Lesson learned.

(I never relied on 3 to communicate... I have always have other alternatives - thankfully).
