Anyone know what the biggest size of rsmmc the 6680 can take
do you think this one would work?
512 on ebuyer (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=7640779385&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=64166)

Hi,

The card you buy needs to be RS MMC DV (DUAL VOLTAGE) - the DV is very important!

The largest currently available, I believe, is 256mb.

I used this place, and got a card reader for £11 which makes everything sooo much easier! http://www.mobymemory.com/RS_DV_Dual_Voltage_MMC_Memory_Cards.asp

Theoretically, the 6680 will take as bigger card as they make.

Hope that helps,
Ben

All nokia DV RS MMC phones will be capable of taking any DV RS MMC made. Keep in mind that ALL nokia branded RS MMC's are standardly made dual volt, so if you ever see a nokia made RS MMC thats larger than 256mb and you wish to purchase it by all means go ahead as it is dual volt, even if it doesn't say it. A company has made a 512mb DV RS MMC, but i cannot remember where i saw it. Was around 79.99 or something though, so i don't think anyone will be buying it soon.

Indeed, be careful - they must be DV!

Here is the whole story that explains why a Nokia 6680 cannot use a standard MMC card : this type of card was originately powered in 3 volts. The MMC controller (the chip inside the handset which the function is to read the card) of the 6680/6630 etc... only delivers a 1.8V voltage. So an old MMC won't be compatible with this handset. It can be a problem if you purchase a commercial software such as Route 66 (and other ones), which is delivered on a standard, non Dual Voltage MMC. You may check the type of MMC before purchasing such a software. I suppose if you had already purchased the software without having checking first the compatibility, a backup of the software to a MMC-DV with a card reader connected to the PC would solve the problem, but you would have to purchase an extra blank DV card for that purpose. It is less risky to ask the manufacturer if the software is compatible.

As for the MMC capacity, the data bus is serial so the only capacity limit is the one imposed by the format (I don't know how much it is), so if a MMC card exists in a given capacity, it will work in your handset. The MMC data bus cannot be parallel as it would need a 28 points pinout and this card is too small to have that much of them. I have seen 1GB MMC cards, unfortunately they weren't Dual Voltage.

The biggest I have seen in 256mb and this has improved since the start of the year when the biggest was 64mb when the 6630 came out. I have found a few on ebay and would certainly advice doing your research first

It's also worth adding that when I got my 256mb card I had to format it in the handset before placing files on it. Formatting the card in a card reader made it unreadable to the phone. I've also read previously that to ensure phone stability all cards used in the handset should have been formatted by that handset.

I simply:
Placed the original Nokia card into the card reader,
Copied the contents onto my desktop,
Formatted the new 256mb card in the handset,
Inserted the formatted card into the card reader,
Copied the original Nokia card contents from my desktop the new card,
Inserted the new card back into the handset.

All applications work fine, and I have the benefit of a backup card should I ever need it.

I have seen others elsewhere blame the firmware for not being able to use a larger card in their 6680 when the most likely cause is not formatting in the handset.

There also seems to be an element of trial-and-error, but following the flow above should give a successful outcome.
