The iPhone is still a lovely object, and the latest incarnation with 3G, AGPS and push email at least brings the spec up to offer a decent comparison with the best Windows Mobile and Symbian smartphones. But failure to keep up with some of the basics - MMS, video capture, Bluetooth stereo - means the shine is beginning to wear off the iPhone's fancy display. Apple will need to get its screen-pokin' finger out to keep up with the competition.
Well, this may raise a few hairs, but I think The Register did miss the point with this review. Video capture and MMS are obviously very important to the reviewer... while the App store seems to get nothing more than a passing glance and the incorrect label that it is only available over WiFi.

So, all in all, a sloppy effort. But then El Reg don't like Apple, anyway, so perhaps the 80% score is more of an achievement than I'm giving credit for.

I think the iPhone 3G is developing a marmite affect on reviewers and consumers alike!

As much as people slate the iPhone for its lacks, Apple must be doing something right to get thousands of people across the world flocking to Apple Stores and operator outlets to pick up this handset.

Lets flip the tables slighty; If Nokia released their own iPhone with the exact same feature set as Apple's iPhone, i could bet money it would fail. Imagine the next top-end NSeries handset "now with a 2 Megapixel camera and no mms". I cant quite see that working.

Apple seem to have the magic "touch" (see what i did there??:D) when it comes to the iPhone. I think it shows that consumers arent as interested in spec sheets as the manufacturers would like us to believe!

LOL , reminds me of when iPhone 1 was launched

If something is crap , then quite simply no one will bother writing about it

....But if something is REALLY good - what can publications do to get attention ? Do they just agree with everyone else ? Well of course not ! they can't be seen to simply nod in agreement with everyone else , no one is going to pay a blind bit of attention to that

No - their only way to get any attention is to appear contraversial and focus on the devices shortcomings - Great for the first few hundred or so reviews , but TBH it becomes BLOODY boring after this point

Put "Iphone sucks" into google , and you'll see thousands upon thousands of nobodies , falling over each other to point out that the iPhone doens't have MMS or Cut & Paste ! :D Virtually anyone who has used the iPhone is blown away by it - yet listening to some of these idiots you'd think it was a terribly flawed and destined for faliure !

How about we knock up a "Top 100 anti - iPhone articles" - then perhaps these idiots may realise that they needn't waste their time

I note the register gave the MS Zune 75% :D:D

Spot on Miffed!! I think certain tech sites are annoyed that Apple have the "power" to sway people from spec-racing to user-friendliness!!

LoL @ Zune! Wow, and didn't that do well ;)

I completely agree wrt the spec sheet Bleubean - it's crazy what people *think* they need. Yes, I know some people have a genuine beef with, say, video capture if they actually use that a lot, but the cold hard truth is that there's so much crap in mobile's that we don't need these days. Apple is focusing on the stuff that we do need, and making it a hundred times better.

Well Darth Jobs said in his iPhone 3G speech that iPhone users know how to use many more features of their phones then that of users of "standard" phones!

I bet you couldnt get Average Joe running his mp3 player, browsing the internet whilst texting on the go, straight out of the box with a number of phones!

I note the register gave the MS Zune 75% :D:D

I remember before I was a Mac man, I wanted the Zune real bad - But wasn't released in the UK only US.

.. Obviously I don't anymore.... but what actually happened to it?
