VoIP giant, Skype released a beta version of Skype on your mobile, which will make the internet calling service available on 50 Java enabled handset from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. The beta version will be available globally, with features including chat, group chat, presence and receiving SkypeIn (receiving calls from landline or mobile to Skype) calls. Eight countries, including the UK, will have Skype-to-Skype and SkypeOut calls (calling mobiles or landlines from Skype).

With the beta version, Skype hopes to get feedback on the service from technology savvy consumers helping it improve and tweak it before full commercial launch. The beta stage is expected to last for a few months.

‘These are still the early days for making Skype calls on mobile phones, but we've already made great strides in this space,’ said Gareth O'Loughlin, general manager, mobile and hardware devices. ‘While Skype for your mobile is in beta, it is an important time for us to listen to our users‘ feedback, be it through surveys or user forums. We need to hear what delights them and where there is still work to be done. But this product underscores our commitment to innovation and to putting Skype conversations in the pockets of today’s mobile masses.’

Skype launched a handset with 3 last year, enabling users to make Skype calls from their mobile to other Skype accounts or mobiles and landlines.
