View Full Version : What is going on with my E90 / HSDPA ?

I am a little miffed as to what is going on here
My e90 seems to give me crap data speeds, even when the 3.5g indicator is on.
I thought is was a t-mobile / network thing , but I note that if I put the SIM into another HSDPA device , I get blisteringly fast HSDPA ! , and if I put the SIM in any other vanilla 3G device , I get reasonable 3G speeds - yet the e90 simply returns speeds of 70 -120 kbps :(
Tried in several locations , still the same - Strange because I know it has worked in the past , but now I seem unable to get decent speeds ( oh , I have checked 'enable high speed packet access )
Restored to original settings this morning , still no change , next step is to see if there is any way of flashing to the previous firmware , pain in the neck really
Any ideas ?

Hmm, the plot thickens .... Reflashed the e90 this morning , no change
I tried my 3 sim in the E90 , and , hey presto , HSDPA works ! - So the E90 is definately capable decent speeds -
Yet I still get crap speeds with the T-mobile SIM in the E90 - yet put it in any other phone and it is fine ! How can this be ? Seems to be some kind of compatibilty between the E90 and the T-mobile SIM - All settings appear correct - and the 3.5G icon comes up - but the speed is pathetic (around 7kbps ATM !!! )
Yet pull the SIM out and put it in any other 3G /HSDPA device and it is fine !!
My head hurts

Does the T-Mobile SIM run at HSDPA speeds in another handset (i.e. N95 or suchlike)? It may just be that T-Mobile don't have HSDPA enabled for that SIM (its not on Web N Walk, but is by default on Web N Walk Plus and Max tariffs).

I blame T-mobile. My 3 sim works fine in a three branded E65 which is not HSDPA equipped, but when I switch it to an O2 N95 I get 3.5g and a noticable difference in speed without problem. It must be a t-mob fault.

No , this is the bizarre thing - Put the sim in ANY other device and it works fine , HSPDA (or normal 3G) - it is only when the sim is in the e90 that the speed sucks (and I mean SUCKS - the last few tests have shown 7kbps !!) - This is with the HSDPA icon on
- Then I quickly pull out the sim, put it in the Ameo , and ge 1.3mbps !! - switch it back to the E90 and get 7kbps !! - it has to be seen to be believed !
...Then , just when you think you are reaching a conclusion (i.e. The e90 is faulty) - I try a 3 SIM , and get HSDPA , on the E90
All I can think , is that the network is able to "discriminate" between handsets at their end ?

Well, they can by IMEI yes, but I have no idea what the purpose of throttling your throughput in this device would be. Bizarre.

well my guess is that it *may* be down to the E90 not being an "official" HSDPA handset - I actually had HSDPA manually activated on my standard web and walk account , back in the days when the Vario II was the only HSDPA handset available on T-mobile (or anywhere for that matter !) -
Different people had different experiences , some swear their "ordinary" sims just worked as soon as they put them in an HSDPA device, others say they didn't and the would only get 3G - CS offered a different story to each person that asked them !
I am wondering whether T-mobile have set up something to block HSDPA to any devices that they do not sell directly ?
Tempted to run the E90 on 3 for a while TBH

I had given up on this , but you know how these things niggle you ?
I have finally got to the bottom of it , and am now well happy as I though there was either a problem with my SIM or the E90 !
When I put my T-mobile SIM back in this time , received the usual text offering to send me the relevant settings - ... I usually ignore this , as Nokia's tend to sort this out for themselves quite well , but , given my problems, this time I replied to the message and installed / saved the settings
.....Voila ! first speed test showed 524kbps :D:D (OK so not blistering , but at least it acceptable ! - Done a couple of reports since, and it all seems to be fine
So .... What was causing the problems ?
Well, I had always had the impression that a username/ password was a formality on T-mobile , and any (or no) Data in these fields would not affect you connection at all - However , the ONLY difference between the 'working' and 'non-working' settings is the username ! (and possibly the password ) The non working 'username - User' , the working one was 'username - T-mobile'
Interestingly though , I am using the 'wrong' details in the e61 ,N80, Ameo, and wifes n73 (all with my sim) and they all work fine
All really strange IMO - but who cares ? At least its working now :D

Congrats :D *shakes your hand*
Maybe just receiving the settings caused something to change at T-Mobile's end. I guess we'll never know.

Cheers !
Pain in the neck though ! - if it were my only device , I'd be thinking how rubbish T-mobile's 3G /HSDPA network was ,
I am sure I can't be the only one to have had this problem , something so silly could completely trash your user experience if you didn't know better !

I bet that if you'd called T-Mobile CS they'd have taken a first action of downloading you a new set of settings :D
Grats on getting it working ole bean. Was beginning to despair for you :)
