From Scotland Today 07/05/2005:

O2 brings 1,500 jobs to Glasgow

Fifteen hundred jobs are coming to Glasgow in a massive boost to the city's call centre industry. Mobile phone giant O2 will give details next week of its new customer service centre on the Clyde, aimed at feeding expansion of its retail outlets.

The economic development agency Scottish Enterprise beat off competition from sites in northern England to land O2 which will move into Sky Park Building off the Clydeside expressway. Recruitment will start almost immediately for the posts. At a time of intense competition for customers O2 has moved to cut office jobs down south but plans to hire customer facing employees in Glasgow to boost sales. Around a dozen mobile phone operators are battling for a share of the UK market, O2 has about 24 million subscribers in Britain, Ireland and Germany. It wants to cut customer churn to other networks by boosting service. Seven weeks ago the world's largest personal computer maker Dell announced 850 call centre jobs will be created at the City Park Building in Glasgow, for decades the Imperial Tobacco factory on Alexander Parade. First Minister Jack McConnell said then it shows Scotland has what it takes to help firms grow their businesses.

Jack McConnell MSP, First Minister, said: "But Dell has chosen Scotland. They've chosen Scotland because of our education system, because of our commitment to providing them with the kind of environment where companies can succeed. They've chosen Scotland because of the talent in our workforce. And that can only be good for the rest of Scotland, not just Glasgow."

Around 60,000 people are employed at 300 call centre across Scotland. Glasgow has attracted around 2,500 jobs in the last three months.
