Why are you going to miss it? Finally ditching cable?

That upstream is diabolical for the downstream! Nice downstream, though ;)

I'm going to have to - get it free on my new firm - but only 8Mbps! :(

Seems a little crazy to be going backwards, but I suppose free is free.

Still seems a little crazy ;)

What are your current pings to www.bbc.co.uk and www.google.co.uk? Would be good to see some Cable vs ADSL.

The BTNET ones were over the office connection, so that was pretty busy. It doesn't look like the traffic on either of our connections has affected the pings, though. BTNET Fibre rocks!

The Voda 3G pings were over an otherwise unused connection, FWIW.

BTNET Fibre rocks!

Which is what most of Vodafone and O2 run their backhaul and transmission network on, even Orange, T and 3 have a fair chunk of BT stuff, makes you wonder what happens to your packets once they leave BT to increase the ping son much!

Indeed, it's a bit worrying isn't it. I remember discussing in the past the number of hops a packet has to go through to get through Vodafone. Despite this, latency still seemed lower than on other networks. The vast majority, 90ms or so I think, of the latency was from the air interface (or at least the first couple of hops) though I think.

Amazing results from Speedtest - I'm amazed at the Global and National rankings. Don't anyone tell Virgin Media or they'll be hiking the charge up [again].

Apparently, in early 2008 we can expect 50Mbps  for the same price!!

The thought of going down to 8Mbps ADSL fills me with dread :( I might just have to lump it and stay .....

Here's a test done this afternoon with good old UMTS.

The second link was with a 2-3 bar signal og HSDPA.

Spot the difference!!

Can you do the ping tests for www.bbc.co.uk and www.google.co.uk when in HSDPA? :D I'm interested in latency to these web hotspots as I feel they make for a sensible comparison.

While connected, go to Start > Run > cmd and then type ping www.bbc.co.uk (for example). Press Ctrl +C when you want to terminate the ping.

OK Here is the results...... uploaded using 3 HSDPA of course!!

Cool thanks, looks like Vodafone is still the latency king, though your Google results wern't bad at all. I wouldn't like to speculate about what happened to your BBC results!

Good stuff, happy browsing!

Much happier now using the Viewty with a USB connection. Tried it yesterday with Bluetooth and it devours the battery in minutes!!

Looks like 3 have HSDPA all over Glasgow now and speeds are reasonable but nowhere close to the 2.8Mbs they claim. For browsing purposes the speed is about as good as I get on my works network.

The chances are that as 3 continue with their network enhancements that the Glasgow experience of HSDPA will just get better. The thing is, even without HSDPA, anyone with a few years in the saddle will recall that GSM data was/is unusable in all but a "needs must" situation. On the other hand, 3G speeds are more than usable for all but large downloads. Certainly for information gathering on the go it is excellent by comparison.

HSDPA is just better :)

HSDPA seems better but for general browsing the speeds achioeved by standard UMTS seem fine for a single user. The lag that exists on 3 isn't during the download process when webpages load but seems to be when the DNS is resolving the IP address and routing the requests.

It's getting a lot better and becoming affordable to use mobile broadband and after almost 1 week there is hardly a dent in my 1GB allowance. A superb product that one only hopes will be able to flourish without becoming so popular that it clogs the network.

I honestly think you'll be hard pressed to use a gig per month. I don't want to imply your usage pattern, but from a mobile device it's a lot of data. I cane my phone at times and still only use 200mb a week.
You'd have to be going some for 3 to catch you out on a fair usage policy.

What we need now is for a 40GB usage policy or something that could elimnate the landline, then we will really see mobile data take off.

I have trouble using 3GB with my laptop via the handset! I'm on the Internet quite frequently with the handset, several times a day. The lappy gets its share of use frequently.

Re: Three's 1GB & FUP...

On their datacard plans it's 1GB then 10p/MB after that I think - rather than a FUP/cap. Is it not the same on the handset?

Definitely worth keeping an eye on data usage if there's the possibility of extra charges!

Hands0n
8th December 2007, 01:25 AM
Mind you, 10p/MB is not entirely bad - considering how some other mobile operators charge!

Ben

Oh absolutely, it's a good cost/MB charge - but the other operators don't charge anything if you go over the specified usage. Not automatically, anyway.

Hands0n
8th December 2007, 10:23 AM
Yea but, no but, yea :D I was thinking how good 10p/MB is compared to, say, Orange's basic charge for data anyway!

Ben

It's fantastic until a Windows user gets a virus or some such that they're unaware of and end up using several gigs :D
