So 3 have no LG U990's to supply?

They have definately released some and the feedback has been very negative with horror stories about poor reception and dropping calls being reported on this handset.

Side by side signal strength comparisons are worrying.

Are 3 UK upgrading their U990 stock?

I have ordered one and if it sits next to my 3Skypephone and displays a poorer signal strength it'll be going back without having made/received a call or having taken a picture under the restrictive 14 day trial rules.

Well I can report no issues on the Orange variant, side by side with my Nokia and Ericsson I'm sitting with one bar less than full on 3G.

Remember the signal strength is manufacturer specific, what Nokia may choose to show as full LG may choose to show as one bar less than full, just 'cos it shows a lesser strength doesn't mean it's broken! Unless you have some software to view the specific received signal level strengths inside the handset then I'd not worry. Dropping calls however, if it's doing that then you've an issue!

Don't start panicking before you've even got the thing! :)

I am worrying because I have been there and done it with 3 before.

The little 3Skypephone seems to work as well as any GSM handset I have tried where I use a mobile but if the mega feature LG performs like an NEC did I will have serious words with 3 .... again..

Well you've the 14 days as you've mentioned. The roadmap for 3G, for all the operators, involves successions of network software upgrades, the most recent ones being more stable than the last, and the reason why extra services such as HSDPA come along. They all have to do it.

Three will have been through a couple since your last serious use of them, and by the sounds of it, what you've experienced with the Skypephone, it seems to be a great deal more robust than what you experienced in the past.

I'd be fairly confident that another venture onto them would be less hassle than you had to endure previously. I think Three's network is vastly more stable. Obviously, if Three have butchered the SW to the point it makes the device unstable you may have other problems.

Looks like 3 UK have had some LG Viewty problems and handsets have been delayed for some software updating.

For once I don't mind this as a little extra wait is better than a poor customer experience when faulty products are released.

My little 3Skypephone has become my handset of choice lately and tonight I had to wait to pick a friend up at the local station. I watched BBC1 for just 49p and that was a better option than travelling home and awaiting a call to travel back to the station. It's pricing like like that which will make users buy services and change habbits.

Thinking about the Viewty, I am considering adding the 1GB Internet add-on for £10 a month as I would then have HSDPA access on the laptop and plenty of use on the handset too. I think I will be spoiled with free Skype, Windows Live Messenger (which will be great with a touch screen qwerty keypad) and all the free content 3 now provide.

It's all assumption for now but after the 29th of the Month I will be able to provide feedback. If the supplied Viewty is as stable as the Skypephone and I get all the services I will be more than happy... fingers crossed!

It is very encouraging. One of our female staff has got a Viewty (not on 3) and loves it to bits. Says it is the best handset she's ever had.

For sure, the 3 packages are getting better all of the time - and it is easy to overlook the amount of useful free stuff on their portal.

Fingers cross for your new arrival on 29th then :)

(which will be great with a touch screen qwerty keypad)

It's not a QWERTY touchscreen keypad that it uses, it's a graphical representation of the normal numerical key pad al-la every other phone. And to be honest it's better for it. I've used the iPhone's multi-touch QWERTY for typing and I found it pretty difficult to use and not particularly accurate. I'm sure in time that'd improve (there's supposedly some software built in that learns your typing habits, no?) but the LG's touch keypad, and excellent T9 dictionary, has been superb so far.

The Apple touchscreen QWERTY keypad does learn and become more accurate, but as with any non-tactile keyboard it is wide open to finger trouble. I found the same using the Prada keypad, perhaps worse was its poor response to multi-tap - it definitely worked better with T9 switched on. But with the Apple touchscreen I think there is a combination of the device learning and the human getting better at finger placement. My typing speed on the iPod Touch and iPhone is increasing.

My Viewty arrives tomorrow and I'm looking forward to using it.

I could be tempted to add the Internet add-on so I could use it with my laptop and browse on the handset.

I only hope 3's coverage and reliability is better than previous experience. I know using the 3Skypephone that voice and text seem OK but there are major areas of Glasgow where I work where 3 have no 3G coverage and that has been a bit of a dissapointment.

With free Skype and Windows Live Messenger and a huge bundle of texts and minutes I think I should be well catered for. Where 3 have video coverage I think they have the most compelling range of services available with loads of free video, e-bay, Yahoo, Google and Yell included in the basic tariff. with a decent priced Internet add-on and all the rest 3 at last have the best package that make a device like the Viewty worthwhile. Only 02 with the overpriced i-phone package comes close and there are too many restrictions on that deal to make that snob value novelty one which I would consider.

I will be busy over the weekend with my new Viewty and will report in due course!!

Hi all,
I recently signed up a plan with three and got the Viewty.
I was wondering if there was anyway I could modify my Viewty such that I can read Chinese characters or input Chinese characters.
I have heard of flashing and other methods but such services are currently not available anywhere near where I stay. Does anyone know of how I can do it by myself? Or how three can assist me in solving this issue?
Thanks!

Good question.

I am not sure how that can be done.

My Viewty is looking pretty clapped out after 11 months. The screen gets marred easily and looks pretty tacky.

I see the Viewty is now a £130 PAYG phone now. After a year it has plummeted.

Check out some of the chinese web sites for answers re the charicter set.
