A very nice set of iPod announcements. I'm quite taken with the new Widescreen Nano - especially as I've only just bought a Nano :( I might just have to upgrade and hand-me-down the one I just got.
I'm taken with the iTouch - but not at that price! It took me enough years to work up the interest to pay out as much as I did for the Gen.3 iPod 80GB, and it was only the HDD size that did it for me.
But oh my! The now-called iPod Classic with its 80GB and 160GB HDDs - for the same price as the previous 30GB and 80GB! What staggering value.
Makes me go all unnecessary :p

I must admit the Touch version doesn't really have much in the way of storage.. not too impressed with that!

Some of the most usless, hyped up iPods ever. But I know I'm going to get one of them more than likely.. I would have in a heartbeat got the Touch with an 80GB HD but now I'll probably get the classic. It's like they are putting people off getting the touch with its absolutely rubbish storage capacity?

Yes, I do think that with the Touch they are selling the UI more than anything else! But thats not good enough. Its off my shopping list until an HDD version arrives, as surely it will. This is Apple's first generation of that device. Look how far the "Classic" has come in its time.

Well - I've done it. I've gone and ordered an iPod Classic to replace my iPod 5th Gen! :-):)

I've just noticed that the iPhone has dropped to $400, that's £200... is that worth picking up in the US of A in a few weeks time? Just for pure novelty value? The wife isn't coming with me, there'll be no "do you really need that" as I thumb my way through silicon valley! I can hear my credit card twitching in my wallet already!

Yes , they are dropping the 4GB model altogether and reducing the price on the 8GB one
Personally , I may give the Touch a try - OK so not a lot of onboard storage - but it has wi-fi ,and I am rarely too far away from an unsecured network , oops , I mean hotspot ! :o
I note a lot of people are selling iphones in the UK for £300+ with no phone functionality - I think the touch will stamp that out !

Yea, they've done away with the 4GB iPhone and just kept the 8GB - you just know that'll be £400 by the time O2 get it in their inventory over here. You might be able to get it unlocked to use on O2 - but without the [probably] special O2 contract and associated monthly fee you won't get the bells and whistles on the iPhone.

They are going on eBay - supposedly shipped in from the states for that price.
This particular auction (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-3-5-LCD-CECT-IPHONE-DUAL-SIM-MP3-MP4-MOBILE-PHONE_W0QQitemZ270162137781QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3312 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is going to seriously pi55 off Apple if they ever get to see it
The hysteria is still there - take a look at this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APPLE-IPHONE-8GIG-WORKS-WITH-ANY-SIM-WORLDWIDE_W0QQitemZ250160755305QQihZ015QQcategoryZ 3312QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) - how mad is that then? Some folk are seriously deranged!!

If there's a chance of making over a grand on an unlocked iPhone I'm without a doubt buying one! I'll flog it the moment I'm back!

I think you're going to have to move very quickly. Buy one out there with a PAYG SIM, get it unlocked from the network (it has to have the SIM or only the iPod features unlock!). Then you can run any SIM in it for 2G/2.5G networks.
Take a look at the bidders list - its an absolute frenzy. I'm putting that one on watch just to see what it eventually goes for. Another 2 hours and it could easily go up half as much again!!
This lad has got two on the go! He's put another one up for sale on a 5-day auction here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250162094841&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_RCRX_Pr4_PcN_BID_IT&refitem=250130117854&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&usedrule1=CrossSell_LogicX&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget)
At that kind of money, it pays for the flight out, the purchase, the unlock, everything - and a reasonably good time in New York while you're at it!! Clever person - got to get in quick though.

It seems that we may not, after all, be getting ripped off in the usual $ vs £ sign-swap on prices of goods brought in from the USA. Is this Apple's doing? Certainly, elsewhere I still observe the currency symbol being changed from one to the other. Which is not in the spirit of true Forex (Foreign Exchange).
So what does all this mean for those awaiting availability of the Apple iPod Touch? It means good news if recent ads on Amazon UK are anything to go by.
Due to be released on 24 September 2007, you can Pre-Order both the 8GB and 16GB from Amazon;
The 8GB iPod Touch is £199.00 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Apple-iPod-touch-8GB/dp/B000VBEDTW/ref=br_lf_m_1000101963_1_13_ttl/026-7962409-8105258?%5Fencoding=UTF8&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=024XKGNWPYR65S29E827&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=153118491&pf_rd_i=1000101963) delivered
and
The 16GB iPod Touch is £269.00 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Apple-iPod-touch-16GB/dp/B000VBI0EG/ref=br_lf_m_1000101963_1_14_ttl/026-7962409-8105258?%5Fencoding=UTF8&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=024XKGNWPYR65S29E827&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=153118491&pf_rd_i=1000101963) delivered
For the more traditional amongst us the iPod Classic (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-iPod-classic-160GB-silver/dp/B000VBEDQ0/ref=br_lf_m_1000101963_1_12_ttl/026-7962409-8105258?%5Fencoding=UTF8&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=024XKGNWPYR65S29E827&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=153118491&pf_rd_i=1000101963) is due on 11 September 2007 priced at £229.00
"Rip off Britain" is alive and well, make no mistake. But its funny how these Apple prices seem eminently reasonable following a spate of eager anticipation that we'd be ripped off by the $/£ [sales] mechanism.

I ordered my iPod Classic Thursday / Friday from the Apple.com/uk store. Got an email saying it's been dispatched (yesterday) so hopefully I'll be looking at getting it tomorrow/tuesday.
My 5th Gen iPod is only 3 months old.. so it's on eBay! :-) Wish me luck....!

Considering a 16GB touch myself
OK so 16GB isn't great , but it is not bad either - I don't have a huge movie /music collection - and can live without it ALL being on the ipod at the same time
Will keep my 5th Gen 30GB for disk use

Me too :D
But I do want to hold one in my hands before buying. So when they're out I'll be nipping along to the Apple store at Bluewater to get me some hands on the thing first.
Like you I have a 5th Gen 80GB here that I use fairly often, but not as much as the 4GB Nano that I pretty much carry everywhere with me. I'm unsure where the iPod Touch would fit in my portfolio of MP3/Media players.
The 16GB is not a challenge really, unless put in context with the near-30GB of Music and Video that I carry on the 5G/80GB. I really does represent almost all of my Music collection! Do I really need to carry all of that around?
The key, as with the Nano, is to exploit iTunes Smart Playlists and ordinary Playlists to filter onto the iPod only that which is wanted from time to time. True, it is more onerous than being able to carry the whole collection around (we really as spoiled by the 5G (and now 6G Classic) iPods).
For the price difference between the iPod Touch 8GB and 16GB I do feel that the larger capacity is the one to go for. My only nervousness about buying a first generation device like this relates to what has recently happened with the two iPhones and pricing. I'd be gutted if Apple do the same to the iPod Touch.
