I'm not sure what has changed but .......

When I first signed up for T-Mobile's Flext 35 with Web N Walk on a Nokia 6280 I tried to make a data connection from the Laptop to the Internet. It is, of course, contrary to T-Mobile's AUP for the vanilla flavoured WNW, but it had to be tried :D It did not work, the Nokia 6280 kept telling me that I needed a data subscription! Completely meaningless message which I took to be T-Mobile blocking it somehow, perhaps in the USIM settings?

Idle curiosity got the better of me tonight and I tried it again tonight. Blimey! It now works. I get a connection speed, according to Windows XP, of 468Kbps, and the performance was very swift indeed.

Not wishing to pi55 T-Mobile off and draw their attention to my nefarious misuse of the WNW facility I quit after a few moments of use. But it is useful to know that, at least in an emergency, I could gain Internet access - albeit "illegally".

Screenshot attached :D

Excellent stuff, I'm glad that if there was some sort of technical barrier preventing the use of WnW with a modem it has seemingly been removed - if only because in a world where the mobops want to push data it's incredibly bad policy if a customer tries to make use of a data service only to be greeted by an error. Much better, therefore, that a modem-using WnW customer gets a flawless service but then receives a call or a letter advising them that they will need to move to WnW Pro if their usage continues... that's something I can imagine happening in the real world.

Its a bit convoluted within T-Mobile's network - just out of curiousity I did a traceroute to a website I know and got the following results, more hops that I'd have thought within T-Mobile (highlighted) .....

C:\tracert 194.117.143.76 (a Blueyonder server)

Tracing route to 194.117.143.76
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Heh, you should see one from Vodafone, it's similarly crazy.

One thing's for sure, they'll need to clear up their routing before there's any chance of them taking a slice of the ISP business.

I'm not sure what, if anything, has changed either.

Before I moved to WnW Pro I could make data connections on 2.5G GPRS using the phone as a modem with no problems at all and people reported being able to use 3G as well.
