Is there a way to view SMS meessages in the Inbox in date order as they are received on the NOkia 6280?

No - they are in a sort of strange order - two messages I received today are in the middle somewhere?

Are they grouped together by sender? I'm sure I had that before on my 6680, I'm trying to remember what I did to resolve it...

AFAICS on my 6280 the SMS are displayed in the order received, I've not tried to sort them any other way - and there does not appear to be a means to even do that! Another 6280 anacronysm?

Have they always been this way, Gill? Are they all new messages that have been received or have some been copied (somehow) from a previous phone or SIM? I've never ever had a Nokia with my SMS sorted in a non-standard way.
