hi i was wondering if someone could tell me.. what can affect the video quality on the n70.. such as memory space etc.. if i put my phone and my friends side by side.. with the same settings (video quality high etc) and start recording..they both record the same.. untill playback.. my friends plays perfect streaming.. and mine lages a lot.. stop start, stop start. i dont have a memory card, could this be a result of that?? caN someone please help.. its a good recorder and its not fair that only mine has this problem. thanx

I would say the memory card is the issue right there.

I don't know how though - but not having a particular place to put such a large file would slow the phone down a fair bit I'd imagine...

( maybe someone else can confirm )

Hi Welcome to talk3g.co.uk

Interesting problem.

The internal memory should not make a difference in terms of the playback of video. It is used as storage and is not involved in the processing of data.

It might be a good idea to check the firmware version of both phones. It could be that you have a less functional version of the phone software and an upgrade could solve your video playback issue.

Keep in touch and let us know how things progress.

Indeed, as well as each handsets firmware version it'd be nice to know if either/both phones are network branded and if so what network they are branded to.

interesting.. that sounds like the reason.. well in that case.. how do i check firmware.. and where can i go to download the latest firmware.. and out of the 2 other n70's i compared with one is network branded (vodaphone), and one is plain nokia (mine is network branded to vodaphone if that helps?.) but even though one is network branded.. it still plays back streaming.. but i think mine is older than both. so firmware may well be the problem.. can someone help me with firmwar upgrading??

You can get the firmware version on a Nokia phone by dialling *#0000#

Firmware upgrades are typically done by a Nokia Service Centre when you report a problem to them.

Also, we're still talking about playback of a saved file, yes? Streaming is very different.

well correct me if im wrong... but isnt streaming a term for a video file when it plays back withought stopping and starting?? but yes im talking bout playback.. cant i download any firmware over the internet and install it via computer link?? because i bought the phone second hand still in box etc.. but he never gave me the warranty even though he has one.. we lost contact..will it cost me to go to nokia service center?.. i called the help line but the operator had no idea what i was talking about.. he couldnt understand me.. he hardly knew english..

Streaming is a term used to describe playing back a media file before it has been fully transferred. It implies playing media over a network.

I take it all the handsets you have tried are shooting video at the same quality settings? If yours is set to a higher quality setting then that could explain why the phone is having greater difficulty during playback. Free memory could also be an issue, so make sure you don't have too many other applications running (push and hold the menu key, press c on apps you wish to exit) and that you don't have too many applications installed.

There is no official way to upgrade the software on your handset yourself. However, all Nokia handsets have a two year warranty I believe, so your N70 should still be covered without the service agent requiring proof of purchase. They might be anal about it, they might not.

heya.. i had the problem with the video quality... now to clarify your query, all the settings where the same.. video quality was set on high.. but i checked the firmware like it was suggested. and my phone is 2. something, and the other is 3. something is that it? and seeing i dont have a memory card.. could lack of internal memory b the problem?

Thanks for your PM, freestyla.

I would suggest reporting the error to your nearest Nokia Service Centre (http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,77483,00.html), asking them to update the software on the handset. Alternatively you could try doing it yourself, using the link in my previous post for help, at your own risk.

If you can get your hands on a memory card easily then I'd suggest trying that first, but I doubt that's causing your problem. Ensuring you don't have too many applications running on the handset or too much stored on the phone memory is important, though.

Just as a note, there were issues with the N70 when internal memory starts to run low, so is probably the cause of the problem. In order to store lots of media the fiels are compressed, and these are uncompressed to temp files on the internal memory or MMC for viewing playback. So, when memory is low, you will find it takes ages to open gallery images or you will get the playback stop-start. There was a fix in later versions to improve this but I honestly can't remember which. I think it was prior to wk41 (i.e. V 2.0539.1.1 or earlier) that the problem was not fixed in... wouldn't like to bet on it though. Grab a memory card for it and use that to store you r vids and you *should* find the problem goes away...

I love Yssybyl's vague knowledge...

:)

It's so randomly correct.
I love it.

*smirks* cheeky!

I've been out of the industry since Dec 05 and I no longer have access to the bug logs so it's a good job I listen to the voices in the back of my head else I'd never post :P

Mine is also 2.something and i have the same problem. Sometimes it even lags when it is recording. storage space has NOTHING to do with it. i have a 1gb card. the only thing i can suggest is that you reduce the quality to 3gp. that seams to playback a bit better.
