Nice, that's quite some handset. It'll be interesting to see how well it does, not just on Three but in general.

It is supposed to be the "Blackberry killer" with full support for the Blackberry email server back-end. The E61 may well be a bit pointless on 3 with it's [still] walled garden approach, unless you spend another £15 or £45 on full Internet access, and then it may still not work if that Internet access is restricted to using the handset as a modem to a PC/PDA! So at £60 or £90 per month for eMail access, it may well much be cheaper to use any other UK network with an E61 as a Blackberry replacement.
Works in offline mode. read and write email even when network is unavailable
So, unless 3 have a different [Internet access] approach to Customers who buy into the E61, there will be a number of disappointed people out there.
Someone give 3 a shake and wake them up! Its getting embarrassing now.
NB: Taken from the Nokia E61 web pages (http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,6771,63942,00.html)
There are several ways to receive email on a mobile device. These are to do with the application used, and the underlying technology that makes it possible. With web-based email services, a browser is used to access the email interface on the mobile device. With a client-server email implementation, the user interface is provided by the email client, which interacts with an email server to send/receive email messages. This is similar to email clients you may use on a desktop PC like Microsoft Outlook.
In some email clients, such as BlackBerry, email is automatically retrieved when email is received. In other email clients, the user decides when and how often e-mail should be fetched.
More on Client-Server Email here http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,8764,65247,00.html
The above all supposes unfettered Internet connectivity from the handset permitting the handset to connect back to the enterprise email server, possibly using VPN (Virtual Private Network - an encryption technology) for security purposes.
I'm not convinced 3 allow that kind of communication, yet.

The point is that Blackberry will not want 3 to do any pushing. The relationship is directly between the Blackberry client device and the Blackberry push server back at the Corporate HQ with, or without, VPN. 3's pushmail is okay for @3mail.co.uk but hopeless for @hsbc.com (to pick but one corp who I know uses Blackberry front/back ends). These need unrestricted, fully open Internet connectivity end to end. There is no mention of 3 giving away such access within the £45pcm contract - so I am presuming that an additional £15 or £45 is required if Blackberry replacement functionality is required by the customer.

3's mobile office tariff has PushMail for n6630 6680, n70... for all email addresses, only currently works on those phones.

Oh hang on ... isn't that a proxy to your own private POP3 email? So 3 pick it up for you and then push it onto your handset. That would never work with Blackberry server which does all the pushing itself. The corps would not like a proxy between their VPN'd server and the client itself.

Hi All,
I've got the E61 with 3 on trial before i decide whether to cancel and jump ship to Blackberry.
A few issues: firstly 3s call centre peeps dont seem to know much about supporting this new service. Fortunately, there is a dedicated UK number who are very knowledgable.
To get email there are 2 options - Mobile Office Email and Mobile Email. Office email i thought allowed multiple email accounts to be setup including pop and exchange server. Unfortunately after 4 days of waiting for my activation text msg. I was told that this is only available to 3's Business customers.. And it doesnt do pop - only Exchange server mail. Not a great start..so I've now signed up for Mobile Email which is the personal use pop email access. I'm told this is will collect and push my pop email directly to a mail client on my phone (and it does NOT forward to the 3mail). However this remains to be seen since I have not received my setup text msg yet.. Furthermore - you can ONLY setup ONE pop account! Compared to Blackberry's 10 this is a major short coming and I am already trying to find out if Vodafone (the only other UK carrier of the E61), has this same restriction..
If anyone's interested i'll post furhter details of Mobile Email asa I get it up and running.
T- 5 days till my E61 trial expires and I have to decide whether to keep it or cancel my contract...
It's not looking good so far

Hello OTP, welcome to Talk3g and thank you very much for your splendid posting about the E61 trial you are undertaking. It is indeed very interesting to read your experience so far with 3's understanding and provision of eMail to the handset. Have they got it right? I guess that you'll be finding that out if you ever get that activation text from them.
Yes please, we would love to read all that you find out about the practicalities of E61 ownership under 3 and/or Vodafone. I think you may get stronger pre-sales support from Vodafone, if not from the CS over the phone then maybe by talking to one of their staff in-store.
Looking forward to your further postings :)

...So some 2 weeks later and i've finally made some progress..
In the end i dropped Three as up to the 20th of July i still had not received the text message inviting me to setup email access. This with the single email acconut policy for Mobile Mail meant it was not a viable option.
I have since signed up with Vodafone on a business tariff with their Business Email package for push email. Service to date has been great: my old number was transfer exactly when they said it would be, and not long after i received a text inviting me to setup my push email. All good thus far
However, for some reason i couldnt setup the email account i wanted to (an acount hosted with my ISP's mail servers) for push mail. I did however successfully set it up to send / receive mail via Pull. So i have pull email via wap - but not push - which defeats the object of having the E61!
I have just spoken to Vodafone this morning and I was informed that NOKIA are having problems with certain E61 handsets receiving push emails !? I asked the customer service lady when this would be fixed, after going on hold (she spoke to the 'handset dept') I was told to expect a call back from the Handset dept who are now going to spk to Nokia and get an update....
SOOOOoooooo progress of sorts, if only better customer service from Vodafone! Will keep you posted on what Nokia say

Had mine a few days now & there is no access to 3's content
I use it for business & personal use so i decided to try & access the football scores at the weekend whilst in Carlisle ..... No access to the content other than MY 3,mobile mail, internet sites(external sites) & wireless.... Not much use if you want to check on the football or fancy some video clips to get you through the journey home.
3's CS are bamboozled by this & claim it should work(or at least India does) ..... at least if it its not sorted I am still within my 14 days cooling off period.
