View Full Version : upgrading the firmware yourself

Thought I'd carry on this topic in the right section.
As mentioned here (https://talk3g.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12778&postcount=4).
I tried to do it last night, but I couldn't get the pc talking to the phone, so I'm assuming that somewhere along the installation something has not installed correctly. It is most likely the cable driver, but I'm going to try again tonight. I only spent about an hour at it, so I'm sure it'll work in the end.
Anyone else had a go yet?

That mega upload link doesn't work for me, it says download limit exceeded or something.
Any ideas, or another location to download it?
EDIT: Sod's law, it started working only after I posted this.

I'm getting the same problem as you, gorilla.

Success!!!
Easy the second time round.
I did a system restore to a point before the initial install.
After you have the latest phoenix installed and you have opened it, you need to create a manual connection (usb) to your phone via the file menu. Next access the flashing menu and load the files found in the RM folder that you will have extracted already. Then just follow the on screen instructions and sit back, relax and you will have a generic 6680 in a few minutes.
**A word of warning though. Backup your contacts, I lost mine (d'oh :o although that might not be a bad thing ;) )**
Just to add (in case anyone is worried) the phone is still unlocked.

Hmm, I don't seem to be getting any joy.
Exactly what was it that you did differently second time around?

I didn't install the 2005 version, just jumped straight from 2004 to the latest 2006.

Glad you got it sorted.

What an excellent find. As a bit of an unlocker/reflasher myself I'm impressed with this for the 6680. Especially as its using just standard cables and stuff.

I'm really glad you guys got it working too - been following this thread on and off.
Shame they cant do it for all S60 phones eh?
gorilla
13th May 2006, 11:25 AM
If you follow the thread in the dotsis site it appears that someone has successfully upgraded their N70 and a 6630. I would think that in time more firmware will become available.
I just can't get over the difference it has made to my handset.

Is it really that good dude?
Whats changed about it and how has it improved?
gorilla
14th May 2006, 10:44 AM
I could just be imagining it, but I think it now handles its memory more efficiently. There are subtle changes in the way it looks. I just have the impression that it looks and handles better. Let's not forget that I had the original firmware on the phone in the first place.

Ah right - cool.
I wonder how you'd go about getting your hands on the latest generic N70 firmware..

One thing I noticed is that the camera remebers what the last flash option was. Not much, but really useful when using the camera a lot.

Follow the instructions here (http://www.dotsis.com/mobile_phone/showpost.php?p=46035&postcount=53)
Once you have got phoenix installed and you have connected your nokia, commence flashing and load the software that you have downloaded.
Have a read over these instructions (http://www.dotsis.com/mobile_phone/showpost.php?p=45539&postcount=14) while hard to follow, they do actually tell you all you need to know. Any problems just post on here and we'll try and help you out.

Does anyone know if you can use this software to upgrade a Orange 3230?
Cheers
gorilla
18th May 2006, 10:49 AM
As far as I know it's only for bb5 nokia's e.g. 6630, 6680, N70, so no I'm afraid.
hecatae
19th May 2006, 11:52 PM

@ mob453
Thanks for replying
I have downloaded the flash file but not sure which ones to use....
I have .01, .02 .03 etc files about 5MB each and .C1, .C2 files (27MB and 29MB).

20th May 2006, 04:01 PM
.c1 is the main/core firmware
.01 .02 etc is the language/branding file

I try to connect the 3230 using a dku-2 usb cable, but the phone does not seem to be conected in Phoenix but windows 200 does detect it. (It is an Orange branded one if it makes ay difference)
Also if you try to flash regardless of it being deetected, Phoenix asks for a pin for "FPS10"
Any ideas?
Thanks

Have you manually configured phoenix to recognise that a phone is connected? I had a similar problem to you and that is what I had failed to do.
If this is your problem then you need to do this:
in Phoenix go to file menu/Manage conection/Add/Manual/select USB/ to support on END/ Apply and Close.
Phone should now be showing as connected in phoenix. Then install the firmware from the flashing menu.

Would flashing my N80 with generic firmware affect the warranty?

would flashing a nokia phone with nokia firmware affect the warranty?
doubt it, you've got a two year warranty anyway, which is much longer than your contract.
timothythetim
28th May 2006, 12:54 AM
D'oh, my N80 is now a brick. Won't switch on at all.
It was flashing fine then something went wrong, maybe it got disconnected or something but now it doesn't work at all. I found an article about dead phone flashing but I can't seem to get that to work either.
Are orange shops open on a Sunday anyone?
I will take it in tomorrow and see what they say. If they don't ask, I won't tell them that I tried to flash it. If they do, I might just say that it stopped working when i tried to use it with the computer via usb.

28th May 2006, 01:50 AM
Yep, Orange shops are open Sundays... I wouldn't mention anything about flashing the thing yourself, you'll of invalidated your warrenty. If anything, I'd say that you were connecting it to your PC via the cable to sync it with contacts and email and it stopped working, at least that way it can be put as a handset fault, not a timothythetim fault!

Your best bet it to reflash with the same sw you were trying to load. Go into the connections in Phoenix & remove USB. Open the product for N80 (don't autoscan) & then choose SW Update. This should enable the dead mode tickbox. Chosse that & the same SW, click to start & while the phone is hooked upto the USB power it on. Good luck!
timothythetim
28th May 2006, 10:26 AM
Hmm, when I open the product for the N80 and click software update, there is no dead mode tick box?
Also when I connect it via usb windows gives me a message saying USB device not recognised.
I'll pop into orange today and see what they say. No way am I telling them that I tired to flash it myself.

Here's a PDF file that should be read by anyone that plans on flashing their dead phone by this method.

Went in to orange today, told them my phone is broken. They asked how it happened and I said it was when it was plugged into the computer.
I've to bring all the paperwork and manuals and the box and stuff in tomorrow and they are gonna give me another one.
Phew!
