I went today to Nokia Service Centre in Peterborough, asking about upgrading firmware in my n70. They told that they can't do that. Well, the question is: were they too lazy to do it or is it possible that they don't have equipment required. I find both a bit funny, since as a customer of Nokia I can't receive help. In mobile shop near my house they guy said it would be 10 minutes and charge is Ł15. I think I'll pay for it instead of trying again in Nokia Centre :/ What do you think about that?

Hi, welcome to Talk3G!
I absolutely think you should go back to the Nokia Service Centre. If it were me I'd probably hope to speak to someone differently and then pretend I'd never asked before. If they say no again you could try throwing them the line that Nokia Customer Services told you to go to them when you phone up about getting your firmware upgraded.
What network is your phone branded and/or locked to? Did they even find that information out from you before turning you away?
Btw, it may be useful if you go in to them with a 'fault', rather than just asking for a flash straight up. I find that in most areas of life people love to help you if they think you're at a disadvantage to them, and luckily I pull off the 'slightly slow' routine rather well (not a word, solo...).

I went there today. Instead of guy that sent me back yesterday, today I met nice young lady :) She asked what seems to be a problem, so I pointed "laziness" of phone. She said they can do it free of charge if I'll bring it before 3pm. I asked can I leave it overnight because I am working until 4.30pm so I am not able to visit them earlier. She said to make backup of my data from phone and bring it tomorrow and they'll do it for next day. I hope I won't meet the guy again.
It is from Orange, unlocked for Ł20.

Ah great stuff. Why some people are given jobs at all is beyond me - they so obviously don't care about what they're doing. Fingers crossed it all goes well.

Went there today. Met guy that previosuly said they can't do it. This time I told him straight what I want and that I was speaking about it yesterday with that lady. He didn't refuse  I have back cover, sim card, memory card, battery and some confirmation. Going for my phone tomorrow. The worst thing is that they will change it for nwe software, but not generic. Orange one :( Anyway, I don't mind that panel on left side of screen, as long as this upgrade will speed up my phone. Will let you know about outcome of this tommorow in the evening. Cya

Hmm. Don't count on it. In my experience it's the Orange firmware which slows their S60 phones more than their generic counterparts. S60 is slow as it is, without having such an evasive 'theme' forced to run all the time.

I went to them after work and I must admit I left VERY disappointed, or rather pissed. The Guy said "It was sent to Nokia for a higher level repair". What? They can't cope with upgrading a phone, while in ordinary mobile shop they are doing it in 10 minutes, providing firmware that I want? I thought before sending someones phone they should ask me if I want them to do it, since it wasn't broken so badly I couldn't use it. Now I am just cut off from world. I couldn't imagine living without phone, but here I am !!! I am supposed to ask for my phone on next monday, when it HOPEFULLY should be back. Any advice what should be my next step? Do they have right to do such thing? It wasn't worth it since they will not even upgrade it to generic. :(

I guess you just have to wait now :\ I'm assuming the phone malfunctioned when they tried to flash it, so they didn't have a choice other than to send it off.
You could try putting your miseries to Nokia customer services.

With these new BB5 handsets if the Nokia service team cannot re-flash it they have to send it to a higher support level for the work to be done. It does seem to be somewhat random too. Could be something to do with the particular branding by the mobile network operator. Nokia have their successes and their failures. You've just ended up in the latter category.

Well I am still on V2.0539.1.2 19-10-05 (just got off the phone with my local NSC) as the Vodafone firmware still has not been updated, how can they be the first to release the handset, yet take so long to get the firmware updated

My 3 UK n70 had a similar firmware version with similar issues to what you are describing.
though what annoyed me the most was the lack of "Active Standby"
