Not that I know of - Field Test doesn't work AFAIK so you'd need the handset flashed to the generic software.

The option should be in:
applications -> tools -> settings -> network (quite a way down the list) -> Network mode

You should have the option of dual mode or GSM there, GSM being 2G :) (hopefully operator variants won't have renamed this...). This will require a reboot of the phone.

I have (now getting more distant) memories that this was a requirement for inclusion for most (if not all) UK operators. It also stops battery drain if you are in patchy 3g coverage. If it isn't there then there's very little you can do I'm afraid
