"Mobile operator Vodafone Spain has contracted Acme Packet to upgrade its 3G video telephony service. Acme Packet will deploy its Net-Net session border controllers to deliver 3G video telephony services to Vodafone subscribers. The Net-Net controllers will extend the capabilities of Vodafone Spain's W-CDMA network to enable seamless real-time video telephony calling over both wireless and wireline connections. The solution features adaptive NAT traversal technology enabling video calls to cross data firewalls over a broadband connection at the customer premise from a secure network element managed by Vodafone."

Note over both wireless and wireline connections and adaptive NAT traversal, suggesting the availability of Mobile-to-PC video calling facilities... It'd be about bloomin' time...

So have they done research to see how many people are using video calling? It would seem a bit pointless in spending money on something that's not going to get used alot by its consumers.

It would indeed be interesting to see what the current statistic is for Videocalling. However, I do believe that these are [still] early days for the technology, and that there will be a growing acceptance and use of it going forward.

Some resistance to the Videocalling is to do with the expectation of the users, they do not typically like the latency and low video quality. Also, I think that 3 did some early damage by using faked video images in their adverts, plus we are all expecting broadcast quality image and sound.

So, if there is an enhancement to Videocalling in the pipe, and it goes some decent way to meeting the public expectation, we could anticipate a growth in the use of the facility - particulary if the tariffs are brought more into line with Voicecalling (such as O2 do for example).
