Hello
I recently purchased an unlocked n70 (on Orange previously) and sent it to fonemenders(fonemenders.ie) for a firmware upgrade. i was told that the latest update was version 4 and that the mob could be upgraded. a few hours later, i was informed that the phone went blank during the process and needed to be sent to their service center, and that it mite take a week to get it fixed. as far as i know, the update on n70 is currently on ver 3.0546.2.3. what i think mite have happened was that they messed up(coz they admitted it was the 1st time on an n70) and tried the 6680 update, which i think is on ver 4.04.07. any chance that i'll get the phone back in one piece?? cheers and thanks in advance.

They may have accidently wiped the certificates on the phone during the botched update process (can be fairly common if they don't know what they're doing). This will make the phone go blank and not boot and not accept a new firmware image, but a reflash of the certificates and then the firmware solves this if they know what they're doing. However, if they don't have access to the certificates and can't fix it, you may have to ask for it back and take it to a Nokia service centre and try again.
Fingers crossed for you.

this is one reason why you should always go to an official Nokia service centre and then if they screw up you are covered.

Last week I went to my local Nokia Service Centre to upgrade the firmware of my N70...went home to restore my backup from my PC!
Everything works fine, then the N70 wanted to reboot and crashed!
From then you could'nt start/boot the phone anymore. Went back to
the service centre and they had to send it to Nokia...what a mess!

Generally speaking you would have it done under warranty at a Nokia Service Centre. Locate your nearest here: http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,,77483,00.html

If your game enough you could always try it yourself. Myself and timothythetim have successfully upgraded the firmware on our 6680's. See this thread (https://talk3g.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2512). Of course we are still waiting to see if whatleydude has tried it on his N70 yet.
I should probably point out that timothythetim and myself are both out of contract and I suppose can afford to mess with our phones. That said, I have yet to hear of anyone actually damaging their phone via this method.
The official method is as Ben says, take it to a Nokia service Centre, but that's boring :D
