View Full Version : MMS problem on Vodafone

Just thought to let people know about an issue that i've noticed, as i tried to send a video clip on my handset....

This is directly from Voda Cust Services

There is a problem which appears to affect all the Nokia N70's that we have tested so far

When you attempt to send an MMS of more than about 30-40k in size the handset fails to establish a context and the message goes to the outbox. (This isn't always the case as some messages sized 33k and 45k did send successfully but attempts with a 56k and an 84k message failed.)

Messages of smaller sizes are sent correctly and all other functions appear to work (MMS retrieval, WAP browsing, 3G services etc)

There is a work around to fix this:

1.First establish a wap session (via the Vodafone live! link)

2. Then use the 'menu' button and navigate to 'messaging'

3. Create the MMS and send it.

Please note, there is about 5 minutes to do this before the wap session will be dropped for being inactive.

Also, by setting the camera to 'MMS' rather than 'Print' (high quality) or 'Email' (medium quality) will reduce the message size too.

Thanks for the information. How strange :S I wonder what they've managed to balls up!

The size limits on MMS need dramatically increasing as it is... not even being able to get to 100kb much of the time must be a right pain. Doesn't appear to have affected any MMS I've sent on the W900i, thank goodness.

Thanks again!

I've been thinking on this..

Do we think its solvable with a firmware update?

Possibly. The design was that anyone trying to insert something "too large" into an MMS was stopped - in the case of an image it was converted to MMS quality and in the case of video iirc it was a "object too large" error.

However, I thought that the limits were well over 40k. Glad there's a workaround but I can't help but wonder if this is a vodafone issue (like the email issue https://talk3g.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1841 which happened on all 3g nokias on vodafone but no other network)

Has anyone not on Vodafone had this problem?

On voda here but I haven't tried sending an MMS to anyone since I don't know anyone else with compatible hardware.

Seriously? Almost all phones can handle MMS these days - anything since the 7210 can receive MMS messages, even a lot of phones that don't have a camera. You need to take your friends down to the Vodafone store ;)

Ok, I should have qualified that with, I don't know if the little phones my friends and family have could handle the larger format video and images. I didn't expect them to.

Better?? :)

So I tried sending a large video ( 93k ) to my old Samsung D500 on Orange, it only sent the way Aidey6 described.

Sending it the normal way put the message in the Outbox, displayed that it was "Sending" and opened a 3G connection then sat doing nothing much.

When the other phone received them it displayed "Unknown subscriber" and couldn't actually download the video or a small image I sent afterwards. That could be because the Samsung was reflashed last week and has no settings ;)

If you have tried sending a video and it just sits there, you can connect to wap then go back into messaging and use Send to force it.

If you don't try you'll never know! :D
