Once they just offered chocolates or cans of soft drinks on windswept station platforms. But now vending machines have gone upwardly mobile - literally - by dispensing the latest mobile phones.
Vodafone launched its first quickphone machines at its Manchester stores yesterday and said they could become a common sight at train stations, shopping centres and even music festivals. For £30, shoppers will be able to buy a fully charged handset plus £1 worth of credit. Three types of pre pay phones are offered and they will be changed each month. The kiosks can be sited in very remote areas as long as there is an electricity supply.
