HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE Corp. (000063.SZ) has signed a deal to supply Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. (0013.HK) with as many as three models of its third-generation handsets, the South China Morning Post reports.
A ZTE source is cited as saying an agreement was reached to supply its 3G handsets exclusively to Hutchison 3G Italia and 3G UK.
A Hutchison spokeswoman also confirmed an agreement had been signed.
"ZTE will first supply its 3G handsets to Hutchison's two biggest 3G markets, Italy and Britain, around December or January," the ZTE source said. "If things go well, the two sides will negotiate for a worldwide distribution of ZTE handsets in some of (Hutchison's) other 10 markets where it has 3G licenses."
ZTE aims to increase handset production to between 15 million and 18 million units this year, up from 10 million units in 2004, the source said, adding ZTE aimed to produce five to six 3G handset models for release this year.
The size of the deal wasn't reported.
