Orange will start charging for 0800 and 0808 numbers from December according to reports from 'insiders'. Bill inserts will be included explaing the changes in November.

So no more override for Orange users, just a few charitable free numbers will be permitted.

I suspect this move has been on the cards for some time.

Shame that really. I'd just assumed that they already only allowed certain 0800 and 0808 numbers to be used free as that's what the other networks seem to do, to the best of my knowledge. At the end of the day mobops would like to increasingly take share from the landline market - and to do that freephone numbers need to stay free when you use your mobile.

Perhaps this has France Telecom influence... they seem to be all about conformity rather than innovation.
