The Nokia N90 is perhaps one of the most eagerly awaited handsets of 2005. Billed as much as a camera as a phone the clamshell design handset takes 2.0 mega pixel images, features advanced Carl Zeiss optics (the first for a camera phone), a macro option, an autofocus, flash and a 20x digital zoom. The phone also grabs video too in MPEG4 and 3GP formats and will record and make video calls. It also boasts a media player and some decent connectivity options; it pretty much has all the sought after mobile accessories. But, when it launches in the not too distant future, will the sales reflect this anticipation? Analyst Mako Analysis thinks not and claim the hefty dimensions of the feature-packed mobile will put consumers off. The device has a pretty sizeable weight at 173g and though the dimensions of 112x51x24mm maximum dont seem too huge, even when closed the N90 is bigger than the Nokia 6680, and recent successes like the Motorola V3 Razr show that less can be more.
The Sharp 902 offered a similar combination of substance over style with a 2.0 megapixel camera and did not receive the sales figures Sharp hoped for. Plus with a Sharp 3.2 megapixel phone promised for later in the year Mako Analysis might have made a good point. Everyone wants 2 megapixel cameras with video recording and MPEG4 support on a hard disk drive but unfortunately, being fickle beasts that we are, no one wants a brick in their pocket.
