Vodafone posted a 35 percent increase in subscriber additions during the first quarter, to push its customer base past 165 million, the operator says.
During the first quarter, the operator added 4.1 million new customers organically. The company also added 6 million new customers in Romania and Czech Republic through the acquisition of assets from Telesystem International Wireless.
When drilled down by region, Vodafone added 497,000 new customers in Germany, 204,000 in Italy, 368,000 in Spain and 165,000 in the United Kingdom. Vodafone says Verizon Wireless added 1.9 million in its recently ended quarter; Verizon Communications will report second-quarter 2005 earnings tomorrow.
Vodafone also reported putting 1.1 million new 3G devices in service and said in total, 3.3 million 3G devices were in use at the end of the quarter.
"We have seen strong performances across Europe and in the U.S., and we continue to focus on improving our business in Japan. 3G is building momentum with over 1 million more registered devices in the quarter," Arun Sarin, Vodafone's chief executive, said in a prepared statement.
In other Vodafone News, the operator said it joined the Java Verified Program, which was developed to ensure a unified testing and certification process of Java technology-based applications for mobile devices.
Motorola, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Siemens and Sun Microsystems launched the program in February 2004. Vodafone is the first operator to join the program as a Platinum member.
