From www.thebusisinessonline.com (24/07/2005):
VODAFONE will report solid customer growth across its major markets, with more than 3m new additions in the last quarter when it unveils its performance figures on Monday.
This figure does not take into account a further 6m new customers as a result of Vodafone's increased stake in Romania and an acquisition in the Czech Republic, bringing its total customer base to over 164m at 30 June 2005. According to UBS, Vodafone will announce good progress in the UK and Germany with strong net additions also in Spain and Portugal.
UBS believes recent performance figures from Vodafone's competitors point to good quarterly growth figures for the company.
"O2 and Virgin have already reported key performance indicators (KPIs) for the quarter, with Virgin adding 77,000 subscribers and O2 adding 232,000. O2comments about the UK stated they believed they and Vodafone had a good quarter, with the others not doing so well," said a UBS analyst.
But analysts expect Vodafone's average revenue per user (arpu) figure in the UK to fall slightly as a result of last year's capping of mobile termination tariffs, the charge made for handling calls from other telecoms networks.
O2 managed 412,000 net subscriber additions for Germany in the quarter. Analysts believe this growth has been at the expense of German mobile operator T-Mobile and is the result of a service provided by O2, which allows customers to use mobile phones make cheap calls via a fixed network while at home or work. Vodafone has also launched a service it believes will win a growing share of the tariff-conscious German market.
