From Sky News (20/07/2005):
O2 says it picked up 646,000 new subscribers in its first quarter.
An unexpectedly robust UK performance helped bolster another strong German showing.
O2, Europe's sixth-largest mobile phone company with 24.6m customers, said 232,000 new subscribers had signed up in Britain and 412,000 in Germany, its two key markets.
That was substantially more than some analysts had forecast.
The costs of winning new customers - in terms of promotions and marketing - regulatory price cuts in Britain and Germany and rising competition left their mark.
UK service revenues grew by 3%, in line with the company's mid-single-digit full-year target, but by a solid 24% in Germany, topping some expectations.
O2 says it is confident of hitting full-year forecasts.
