From Mobile Tracker (06/07/2005)
The Wall Street Journal notes [paid sub required] in today's issue that Disney is expected to announce a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) deal with Sprint PCS later today. The new carrier will be focused at kids and families:
Disney's newest plans are to tap into its loyal family audience and reputation for delivering children's entertainment to capture a big slice of what it sees as an underserved market for family-focused services. "There is a strong business opportunity here," said Steve Wadsworth, president of the Walt Disney Internet Group. "We bring a lot of unique understanding of this market."
Rumors of a Disney MVNO have been going on for quite some time, MobileTracker first reported on the idea in May of 2004. Another Disney unit, ESPN, has MVNO plans as well.
A Disney branded mobile phone service will surely raise the debate of what age is right to give children mobile phones. Startup FireFly Mobile thinks eight is the time to start.
More coverage of this later today after the expected announcement...

Postscript: Can anyone suggest which UK 3G operator would be best suited as host to Disney's Micky Mouse Mobile Network.
